Foreword
The Cerefy Clinical Brain Atlas: Enhanced Edition with Surgical Planning and Intraoperative Support (CCBA-Plan) and is an outstanding contribution to the field of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, neurology and neuroscience. Functional neurosurgical procedures such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) and lesioning surgery are becoming increasingly common for the treatment of patients with movement disorders and other emerging conditions. The accuracy and precision of this surgery is highly dependent on anatomical targeting and physiological mapping and any effort to further develop and integrate these technologies will improve this surgery.

Anatomical targeting has traditionally been facilitated by the use of stereotactic brain atlases such as the Schaltenbrand and Wahren, the Talairach and Tournoux, and The Electronic Clinical Brain Atlas. The CCBA-Plan is the most comprehensive brain atlas to date and is an exceptional planning tool for stereotactic targeting and electronic navigation of the brain. It integrates, displays and manipulates spatially co-registered atlases including the electrophysiology-based probabilistic atlas of the subthalamic nucleus. It is easy to use, provides advances such as labeling of structures, multi-level zooming, active searching and navigation in multiple planes. The software also allows for loading a patient specific image with rotating and panning capabilities and three dimensional atlas warping features. Furthermore, the atlas facilitates the surgical procedure by allowing for planning, simulating, and annotating actual electrode tracks.

Professors Nowinski, Thirunavuukarasuu, and Benabid have developed a novel and a timely atlas for this rapidly evolving field. The atlas provides superior integrated anatomical, functional and intraoperative features. This interactive brain atlas is an exceptional tool which will benefit everyone from students, residents, to neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroscientists.
